How to Determine What You Want From a New Home

When you start looking for a new home, it’s natural to feel both excited and overwhelmed. There are a lot of things to consider in such a major purchase. But the good news is you don’t have to face the uncertainty alone. As an experienced realtor, I’m here to help you think about how to figure out what you want so we can find your dream home together.

Location Is Always Important

The very first thing you should always keep in mind is where you want to live. If you fall in love with a house and overlook where it’s located, you might feel shortchanged once the honeymoon fades and you realize you’re living too far away from work or you just don’t like the neighborhood.

So as you pick homes to tour, make sure they are in the best area for you and your life. Also, be aware of the neighborhood where each home is located. You’re not just moving into a new house. You’ll have an entirely new community around you.

This means you should be evaluate any noise from neighbors, traffic and even pets while you weigh every home. Take into account how close the houses are to each other, if you feel there might be any privacy issues and how much of a yard you want, too.

Be True to Your Lifestyle

Every person is unique. And your individuality can definitely be reflected in the house that you choose. If you’re a fan of simplicity and enjoy a laid-back feel for your home, then you might not even want to look at a more modern home. Perhaps a log cabin would be more your cup of tea. In short, personal taste should be a top consideration as you begin to think about what you’d like to see in a house.

As a way to get yourself into the right frame of mind, there are a number of key questions you should start asking yourself such as:

  • How many bedrooms do you really need?
  • Are you interested in having a home equipped with all the amenities or do you prefer more historical houses that you can renovate in years to come?
  • How do you feel about having a large porch or a fireplace?
  • Should your new home include a basement?

Make a list of the Must Haves that you want to find in your next home. Chances are that they won’t all exist in one place. But you’ll have a better idea of the features that matter to you. And as you begin looking at different houses, you can prioritize to figure out which qualities matter most.

Look Beyond the Surface

While it’s important to have a clear idea of what you want in a new home, don’t dismiss a house because of surface features either. The décor of a certain place may clash with your particular style, but that shouldn’t necessarily be a reason to cross the house off your list of prospects. If you look past the tangled light fixture in the kitchen or ignore the green shag carpeting in the living room, you may have a real gold mine underneath.

Imagine the possibilities of every house you enter. Once the previous owner’s belongings are completely out and the home is all yours, you can turn it into whatever you wish. So train yourself to see past the small stuff and appreciate the home’s potential for you.
